🚗 Avoid the Hassle of a WOF Recheck

Getting your Warrant of Fitness (WOF) renewed in New Zealand shouldn’t be stressful—but many drivers fail for simple, avoidable reasons.
Before you take your car to the inspection station, you can do a 10-minute self-check at home.
These small steps can save you time, money, and the frustration of returning for a recheck.

1. Check Tyre Tread and Pressure

  • Why it matters: Worn tyres are one of the top WOF fail reasons.

  • How to check: Use the tread wear indicator or a coin—tread depth must be at least 1.5mm.

  • Tip: Inflate tyres to the pressure listed inside your driver’s door frame.

💡 2. Test All Lights

  • What to check: Headlights (low/high beam), indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, and especially the rear number plate light.

  • Tip: Have a friend stand behind the car while you test each light.

🧽 3. Inspect the Windscreen

  • Why it matters: Cracks or chips in your field of vision will fail the WOF.

  • Tip: Get small chips repaired early—it’s cheaper than replacing the whole glass.

🌧️ 4. Check Wiper Blades and Washer Fluid

  • Why it matters: Clear visibility is essential for safety.

  • Tip: Replace wipers if they leave streaks and refill washer fluid with proper cleaner, not plain water.

🔋 5. Test the Battery

  • Why it matters: Weak batteries can cause dim lights or starting issues, both common WOF fails.

  • Tip: If your car hesitates to start or lights flicker, test the battery before inspection.

🚦 6. Ensure All Indicators and Brake Lights Work

  • Why it matters: Non-functioning signal lights are an instant fail.

  • Tip: Check both sides, including the small repeaters on the mirrors or fenders.

🧰 7. Look Under the Car for Leaks

  • Why it matters: Oil or coolant leaks can lead to immediate failure.

  • Tip: Check the ground after parking overnight for any wet spots.

🔧 8. Listen for Suspension or Brake Noises

  • Why it matters: Squeaks, grinding, or clunks may indicate worn pads or damaged shocks.

  • Tip: Have these checked during a regular service before your WOF.

🚪 9. Check Seatbelts and Door Locks

  • Why it matters: Frayed seatbelts or faulty locks are safety issues.

  • Tip: Pull each belt fully and ensure it retracts smoothly; make sure all doors open from inside and outside.

🪞 10. Clean Mirrors and Number Plates

  • Why it matters: Obscured mirrors or unreadable number plates can lead to a fail.

  • Tip: A quick wipe with glass cleaner does the trick—don’t forget the inside rear-view mirror.
